The idea of Flowers from Kabul was born out of my profound love for the Bengali story ‘Kabuliwala,’ written by India’s first Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, in 1892. This story of a Pashtun fruit seller who journeyed to India each year celebrates the quiet courage and enduring values of Afghans—a people whose resilience has inspired me deeply. In today’s world, where perceptions of Afghanistan are often shrouded in biases and misunderstandings, I find myself drawn to the truth: that Afghan culture is not only vibrant and enduring but a testament to beauty, loyalty, and an unbreakable spirit. The language of the Afghans (Dari & Pashto) is a treasure of love and poetry, brimming with an endless array of human emotions that is both strikingly raw and boundlessly tender. In Kolkata, once Calcutta, the heart of Tagore’s beloved ‘Kabuliwala’ still beats, and Afghans, lovingly known as Kabuliwalas, keep alive age-old customs and traditions. Where there were once many, today only 5,000 Kabuliwala families remain in a city of 16 million. Still, their stories and histories resonate through Kolkata’s streets, breathing life into a part of the city’s soul. The beauty of Afghan culture has captivated me in ways I find hard to explain, for it holds a timeless grace that the modern world seems to have forgotten. Afghan traditions—rooted in love, respect, and resilience—are woven into the very fabric of their lives. The custom of mehmaan nawazi, or hospitality, is unparalleled; an Afghan home will always welcome a guest with open arms, often offering their finest bread, tea, and fruit, even in times of hardship. And then there is the rich tradition of storytelling, where evenings are filled with the mesmerizing recitation of ghazals and landays, ancient poetic forms that pass wisdom, sorrow, and joy from generation to generation. Afghan weddings, vibrant and soulful, last for days, uniting families and celebrating love with music, traditional dances like the attan, and intricate henna designs on the hands of the bride. These customs, beautifully simple yet profound, carry an elegance that transcends time, touching a space within the soul. In today’s world, so focused on speed and change, the Afghan way feels like a breath of history, of connection—reminding me of the value in tradition, patience, and the enduring strength of heritage.Flowers from Kabul is a tribute to the enduring Afghan legacy. It is a celebration of human connections that rise above borders, that etch a memory in the heart. It is a story for anyone who has ever known love, longing, or loss—and for those who understand that sometimes, a heart’s light can shine across the most distant lands. Stories of love often become lost in time, scattered like petals across history’s pages. Yet, they continue to resonate in the hearts of those who have passed through Afghanistan—soldiers from distant countries, drawn into a land they may not have chosen, compelled by duty rather than desire. Whether they came with trepidation or curiosity, they became part of a land where love and loyalty mean everything. Across the generations, these soldiers carried with them their own burdens, and in some quiet corner of their hearts, they found themselves touched by Afghanistan’s beauty, its sorrow, and its unyielding spirit. Flowers from Kabul speaks to these timeless connections, to the forgotten love stories woven into Afghanistan’s weary heart—a land that has seen foreign faces come and go, leaving fragments of themselves behind, stitched invisibly into its enduring soul and forgiving soil.
